FIELD GUIDE TO THE FLORA OF GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE AND THE WALKER BAY REGION by Sean Privett and Heiner Lutzeyer

After many months of hard work and a very long wait, the much anticipated FIELD GUIDE TO THE FLORA OF GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE AND THE WALKER BAY REGION, by Sean Privett and Heiner Lutzeyer is almost here!

The book describes 410 of the 765 species recorded on the Reserve, with an emphasis on showy plants common in the greater Stanford to Gansbaai region.  Each species is accompanied by a vivid photograph taken by Heiner Lutzeyer as well as its common name, a full description, flowering time, favoured vegetation community, natural distribution range, conservation status where applicable to its use to humans.  The guide also includes an easy to use key for identifying the common tree species of the region, as well as a comprehensive bird list.

We will be launching the book at a cocktail function with Lomond Wines at Grootbos Forest Lodge on Sunday, the 19th of December at 17:00.  Numbers are limited, so booking is essential.  The cost will be R295 per person and R350 per couple.  This includes snacks, drinks and a signed copy of the book!

The funds raised from the event will go the Grootbos Foundation.  For booking please contact reservations@grootbos.co.za or 028 384 8053/71.

This promises to be memorable evening and is a must for any nature lover in the Walker Bay region!

Congratulations Sean and Heiner!  The book is truly beautiful!

Pack for a Purpose

We, as the Grootbos Foundation, are very pleased to announce that we have been included in the Pack for a Purpose website (www.packforapurpose.org).

Pack for a Purpose was established by Rebecca Rothney and her husband Scott during their first trip to Africa.  Since its inception, Pack for a Purpose and its partners have made several trips to other African countries and have been able to deliver an estimate 1 000 pounds in donations of clothing, school and medical supplies.

By asking travelers to pack 5 pounds (approximately 2.27 kgs) of supplies, they felt that they would be able to involve everyone who wanted to add value to his or her trip by participating.  By delivering supplies directly to the traveler’s accommodation, it would be possible for every traveler to contribute and require no logistical support.  That amount would only take a small space, require little effort and still make a big impact.

For further information on how to participate in this wonderful initiative, please visit their website www.packforapurpose.org.

Over 400 Future Trees in the Ground so far!

Were proud to announce that since we started the Future Trees Forest Restoration Project in July, we’ve planted over 400 Milkwoods, Pock Ironwoods and Wild Peach trees in parts of the ancient Milkwood forest that were damaged by the fire 2 years ago.

It really is a great project this and I think that it’s fantastic for contributors to be able to “get their hands dirty” and really get a feel for the project by planting their own trees. People also get their trees GPS co-ordinates taken, so that in a few years time they can pop onto Google Earth and see how their tree is doing!

Our hope is that the project will continue to prosper, and we have plans to place a large number of trees at the Spaces for Sport project in Gansbaai, where Green Futures has already planted over 500 trees.

Thank you to all the people who have reduced their carbon footprints through this fantastic project.
