Walker Bay DEAT Project

The Department Of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) has established the DEAT Project in Walker Bay, a project concerned with the social and nature concerned areas of social development. Due to 60000 Hectares of Fynbos on the Agulhas Plain being destroyed by a fire caused by strong winds which in turn destroyed the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and the Forest Lodge many alien vegetation invaders were cleared. The accommodation was rebuilt and with the Department Of Environmental Affairs And Tourism and other conservation partners, Grootbos raised R12 million from Government to clear alien re-growth. This DEAT Project in Walker Bay also created jobs for many locals who had lost their homes and jobs due to the fire. Thus the DEAT Walker Bay Project has encouraged social and nature conscious sustainable development.
