Siyakula

The Siyakula Project was the dream of one of the first graduates of Green Futures, Nozuko Pelem. Nozuko wanted to take back to her community in Masakhane what she had learnt as a student in Green Futures. She was particularly concerned about women, whose lack of English or having young children excluded them from Green Futures. The project was launched at the crèche in Masakhane in September 2004 and Nozuko and her team set about creating a safe and green play ground for the children of the crèche as well as establishing a vegetable garden. Unfortunately at the end of 2006 Nozuko returned to her home in the Eastern Cape but her dream has been continued and the Siyakula team now grows vegetables for the local community soup kitchen, has developed a playground at the local primary school, an entrance garden at the entrance to Masakhane and assists in the upkeep And maintenance of the indigenous fynbos gardens at the Spaces for sports project.

“Lend me your ears”
I want to posses something
I want to put you in Greenlight
Why we are here
I want to sweep the floor
before my hero go
“Who is my hero?”
My hero is Michael
Who collect the bone of the brain?
And dream about something,
and that dream is true now
Who is going to fight
or defend you in your dream.
No one I say go forward my hero
to give us many
opportunities in life
I say to you don’t live your dream
Half way because of the
storm of the earth
I say go forward your dream
becomes Green Futures now
Be strong Sean to feed the babies
By food of tomorrow
Susan the prey is on your hands
for Green Futures become
a Green Future for ever
Into another generation
Hilary share with us
the knowledge of Overseas
to make us brighter in life
