Female Empowerment

The Football Foundation’s Female Empowerment Programme concluded yesterday, ending the seven-week course at Die Bron Primary School, in Stanford. The girls welcomed guest facilitators, Litha Beekman and Simone Davel, from the Football Foundation’s careers and employability project, as they discussed the importance of setting goals and pursuing one’s interests.

After identifying what the girls interests were, Litha provided them with poster paper and magazine clippings in order to illustrate their dreams and future goals, which they posted onto vision boards. Once the girls finished decorating, they presented their project to the rest of the group, vocalizing what they aspire to be and future dreams. Litha suggested multiple career paths they could get into in accordance with the passions they expressed.

As the final session came to an end, facilitators Anchelle Damon and Mollie Cusack presented each of the girls with a programme completion certificate, congratulating them on being the first recipients of the Foundation’s Female Empowerment Programme.

Over the past seven weeks, the programme leaders addressed topics such as body image, nutrition and goal-setting in efforts to empower the girls to become peer leaders in the Stanford community. They had a great time getting to know the girls and watching them transition into female role models.  Looking forward, the Foundation hopes to run more programmes such as this one in nearby communities in efforts to empower more young women in South Africa.
