In 1997, Sean Privett conducted a vegetation survey which lead to the first plant list for Grootbos. The Grootbos Foundation team is in the process of preparing a resurvey of the initial 55 vegetation plots from April to October this year. The various species and abundances will be recorded for each plot and a comparison will be made to the original survey. This will give us insight into how the fynbos has changed over the last 18 years.
The Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy has completed its second year of alien clearing with 5650ha hectares cleared and 15 landowners benefitting from this Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative. Grootbos has benefitted by having 1697 hectares cleared to the value of R254 859, 53. We will be entering into our third year of alien clearing in 2015 starting in April.
Thanks to our Groen Sebenza intern, Thilivali Murivhami for administrating the project and to our partners ABI, the Flower Valley Conservation Trust and the Department of Environmental Affairs.
