Growth in Hermanus
Training at Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle started last week and the number of Grade 3 and 4 children attending was an enormous increase from last year. From a consistent group of around 20 soccer players and 4 hockey players, the coaches now estimate that, at both training days this week, 60 children came to play soccer, and as many as 50 for hockey! The significant rise in numbers may have been down to the coaches visiting classrooms at the start of the week, introducing themselves and encouraging the children to come to training. The addition of Khanyisa, a local coach, has also been a huge boost to the training programme and his connection with the children is undoubtedly another reason for the increase in participation.
We also handed out bibs that were kindly donated by our senior intern, Mary Alexander Scholz. The children loved playing in them as they look very professional! The aim is now to keep these numbers high in the coming weeks and hopefully build a team that will be able to play competitive matches against other local teams.
Wish us luck as we try to build and sustain this program!
