In the wake of a successful holiday programme, the FFSA hockey teams returned to training last week, which included a fun “Match Day” on Friday, October 17. Held in Hermanus, this friendly tournament was organized by the coaches and volunteers to give the Gansbaai, Stanford and Hermanus hockey teams a chance to play against each other. The overall purpose of the tournament was not to focus on the results, but rather to provide the children an opportunity to practice the skills they’ve learned in training, learn from some of the older and more experienced players, and to improve their teamwork. With perfect weather, the kids were in the mood to play hockey! Each team, including U-13 boys and girls and U-11 boys and girls, was able to play against every other team, and they played until they dropped. After a fun, exciting and prodictive afternoon of hockey, all the children received a packed lunch, and the bus brought each team back home. All in all it was a very successful afternoon, featuring fair play without exception and happy kids who were able to gain valuable playing experience. More tournaments of this character are already in the planning stage, as the children can’t wait to compete in their next match!
