In 2017, the Grootbos Foundation and Whale Coast Conservation were appointed as a Small Grants Facility to support local conservation and social enterprise projects. Through this partnership, 13 projects were supported within the Overberg, whittled down from an original 40 submissions.
Art Zoo proposed stop animation workshops with local children, adding Penguin Conservation as their theme. They engaged Cape Nature at the Stony Point Reserve who have offered amazing support by providing environmental education lessons highlighting the plight of the critically endangered African Penguin. Two stop animation workshops were hosted by Art Zoo, which reached a total of 24 children from Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Mooiuitsig.
The children were involved in making story boards and creating stop animation shots to be incorporated into the story. After the first workshop, Frazer Barry from Tribal Echo, wrote a song and this was used as a theme for the workshops.
We are incredibly proud of what Art Zoo have achieved by forging partnerships with Cape Nature, Frazer Barry and local children from the community. They have truly embodied our goal of ‘Communities in Conservation’.
