The Food for Sport programme kicked off with the opening of the new Masakhane Primary School. 20 excited Grade 6 learners met the Food for Sport team, Simone and Zozo, on the first day with energy and enthusiasm. The programme started with a lesson on the link between Sport and Nutrition. What you put in, is what you get out. The message hit home as many learners play soccer, hockey, netball, or athletics at the daily Football Foundation afterschool programmes.
The weeks flew by with discussions on what vegetables need to grow, companion planting, worms, fertilisers, mushrooms, veggie entrepreneurship, cooking, and pests and organic pesticide.
Every Friday the team was welcomed by friendly faces who couldn’t wait to learn more. Highlights for the learners were definitely the outings to the Gansbaai Community Farm and the organic Growing the Futures Farm.
The programme monitoring and evaluation was undertaken by North Carolina State University (US) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology who are currently evaluating the Food for Sport Programme.
