18 July is always a special day in South Africa and around the world as communities and organisations gather to celebrate an exceptional international Icon – Nelson Mandela. This year for Mandela Day, a request for the Grootbos Foundation to help host a party for the disabled children of Masakhane was received and agreed to with big hearts. 11 families with children with disabilities from our community were personally invited by Councillor Bennet Msweli to the community hall to enjoy a day of festivities. The day included a local group of children performing cultural dancing, face painting, bubble blowing, and an opportunity to plant one’s own vegetable seedlings in trays to take home. The invited families also received gift packs full of clothing, nappies, toiletries, solar lamps, and a handful of treats for the children. The invitees also went home with full tummies thanks to the wholesome vegetable soup and homemade bread supplied by the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve chefs. A wonderful day was had celebrating the beautiful children of Masakhane and honouring Madiba’s legacy!
