Staff Profile

Each member of the tight knit Grootbos Foundation team bring a diverse set of skills and attributes to our mission of addressing the challenges faced by our communities in the Overberg. Our newest addition to the team is WWF conservation intern, Nwabisa Mjoli.

Nwabisa has recently completed her Masters research for Environmental Science from Rhodes University. Specifically, her Masters centred around the protection of natural resources within household use. Nwabisa’s work at the Foundation will centre around assisting with ecological surveys, project specific research and assisting with general development of the Gansbaai community farm.

Of the projects that Nwabisa is involved in, she finds the community farm the most rewarding. She is inspired by the role the community farm plays in tackling the challenge of food insecurity, nutritional variety and she feels that it empowers and supports community members towards leading and creating sustainable livelihoods. Nwabisa sees her passion for the community work as working hand in hand with her work in nature conservation as she understands that both nature and the community need to exist in harmony for a sustainable future.

Nwabisa was raised in a small Eastern Cape community, Alice, by her aunt, so is not unfamiliar with the challenges and hardships the local communities face. She is passionate about being the link or messenger to the local community to bring about an understanding of the benefits of looking after the environment and nature. She understands that the priorities of communities centre around bread and butter issues, but feels with education and awareness a greater understanding of the benefits of nature and environment conservation could be brought about.

The team at the Foundation welcomes Nwabisa and hope that she enjoys her year with us!
