We have incorporated work placements as a key element to the ABSA careers, employability and entrepreneurship programme. The work place experience provides learners with a unique opportunity to build useful skills that cannot be taught in a classroom environment and provides valuable exposure for learners to a field in which they have an interest.
Prospective employers and tertiary education institutions will always consider those that have made the effort to gain work place experience favourably, as it shows dedication and commitment to a chosen field.
This year, 12 learners from the careers, employability and entrepreneurship programme have participated in work placements in the June school holidays. Examples of some of the placements have been at a panel beater, a hairdresser, an audio fitment centre and a computer services provider. All have gained valuable experiences, made new friends and learnt a little more about the working world beyond the school classroom.
The careers, employability and entrepreneurship programme is offered at five schools across the Overberg and benefit 1 700 learners either in the form of career guidance sessions, work placements, courses or for those that have submitted successful business plans, seed funding.
