Germany Meets Gansbaai

The Grootbos Foundation hockey project was introduced to Gansbaai in 2009, driven by the enthusiasm of former German Bundesliga player, Delf Ness, from Alster Club in Hamburg. Support and interest in hockey has gained support and gone from strength to strength. We were, of course, thrilled to hear that we would have the German Men’s hockey team come to visit. The preparation for the visit started early, our hockey players watched some of the German Men’s hockey teams matches and identified some of the key personalities in the team. On the day, the German flag was painted on all faces and “Wilkommen in Gansbaai” was diligently practiced.

Nothing could prepare our hockey children though for the hockey players arriving in their big coach and walking onto their hockey pitch. We played a mixed match with pro and children hockey players on each team and did some technical drills before having the opportunity to watch the hockey team in action. The children found the interaction inspiring and the team’s representation of the sport has gone a long way to inspiring some talented, up and coming players. Thank you so much for the visit!
