"On a warm and sunny Friday afternoon, Football Foundation volunteers and 18 young girls packed up and set off to the Uylenvlei Retreat to kick off our highly anticipated Female Empowerment Programme. Established in 2014 by the Football Foundation, the Female Empowerment Programme aims to teach young girls in the Overberg community about the importance of gender equality, creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the values of female empowerment. The programme also addresses relevant topics such as the importance of speaking out about sex crimes, HIV/AIDS education, and offers like skills training food and nutrition.
The weekend was filled with lessons on defining Female Empowerment and lengthy discussions on the importance of setting goals and having positive role models. The girls shared their goals and dreams with one another and crafted vision boards with images that inspired them. These activities provided time for the girls to learn and share the values of having confidence and becoming peer leaders in their community.
After working hard in the lessons, the girls eagerly took advantage of our perfect accommodation at Uylenvlei. The hot summer weekend proved to be the perfect opportunity to practice water aerobics in the swimming pool, spend time singing and dancing in the large grass field, and roast marshmallows in the braai pits. In addition to all of these fun activities, a special surprise was revealed when the group was able to learn how to play Djembe drums. It was a very special weekend filled with work and play, and a great introduction to the rest of our 7-week programme."
