The 16th of December marked a historical event, when the full 55 piece Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra performed a Rural Heritage Concert at Gansbaai Primary and later that day, at the Grootbos Forest Lodge. Not only was it a first for Grootbos; it marked the orchestra’s debut performance in the Overberg!
The orchestra delighted a full house in the community school hall in the afternoon, performing and wow-ing the crowds with soul-stirring music, including boisterous theme songs from famous films, namely The Pirates of the Caribbean! The Orchestra included their audience by inviting one of the children to conduct the Radetzky March – and not to be upstaged, our very own Mayor of the Overstrand, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie also took up the conductor’s challenge!
The charity evening at Grootbos was a most magical experience. The lodge twinkled with fairy lights as everyone clinked glasses to toast the beauty of an absolutely perfect Overberg sunset. The orchestra transported us from classical through to jazz standards, interspersed with delectable canapés and wines from the region. The evening culminated in a rambunctious art auction by owner Michael Lutzeyer. Proceeds from the evening were donated to Overberg based charities: Thakalane and Good Hope Early Childhood Development Centres ,the Grootbos Foundation, Silwerjare Dienssentrum, Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Bags of Love. Let’s hope it becomes an annual event!
