Yuvraj Singh Foundation Raises R200000 for Cricket Development in Gansbaai

In a star-studded glamour evening, the Yuvraj Singh Foundation raised over R200 000 for a new cricket development program to be run by the Grootbos Foundation in Gansbaai.

Lean Terblanche (Football Foundation of South Africa), Yuvraj Singh and Michael Lutzeyer (Grootbos Foundation)
The Grootbos Foundation already boasts the very successful Football Foundation of South Africa which runs football leagues, training and education for up to 100 youngsters through the Spaces for Sports project at the Gansbaai Community Sports Centre every afternoon. The Centre is the brainchild of Grootbos Foundation director Michael Lutzeyer, and is situated between the three cultural communities in Gansbaai. Its purpose is to use sports to break down cultural barriers and encourage social interaction and sports development of our talented youth.

The evening was hosted by the lovely Mandira Bedi and laughs were provided by famous comedian Vikram Sathaye. Amongst the other guests were international cricketers such as Shane Warne, Albie Morkel, Kumar Sangakara and Brett Lee, as well as Bollywood star Preity Zinta, Consul General of India Harsh Vardhan Shringla and the Deputy High Commissioner of India Vikas Swarup.

Thank you to all who made this evening possible, and to the fantastic audience who supported our cause by partaking in the auctions of IPL shirts, getaways to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and even Yuvraj’s mighty cricket bat!

German International Womens Hockey Team Visit Grootbos

There was great excitement last week as we had a day visit from the German Womens Hockey Team who are currently touring South Africa. The squad of players, coaching staff and managers travelled all the way from Stellenbosch to spend the day experiencing the Foundations projects.

They were especially interested in seeing the Spaces for Sports project, because in addition to the FIFA standard soccer pitch, there are also two hockey fields being built on the site. The ladies were hugely impressed by the scale and quality of the project, and were amazed that such a project could exist in a small town such as Gansbaai.

They tried very hard to instil a hockey culture in the young budding sports stars! It was great to see this team of young ambassadors getting so enthusiastically involved in our local community.

The ladies then returned to Grootbos to meet with our 2009 Green Futures students. It was a great meeting from both sides I think, and the students regaled the visitors with some song and dance, while the girls enjoyed experiencing the wonderful learning environment of the college.German womens hockey team in the Green Futures Classroom

It was lovely to have the hockey players at Grootbos, and we would like to thank them for making the effort and for being so interested and enthusiastic. There was talk of trying to link our Spaces for Sport project with various universities and institutions in Germany, and we will work hard to make these links a reality.

Good luck with your matches against South Africa girls, and we look forward to seeing you again!

Article on Grootbos and the Foundation in Australia

We were happy to have the Garden Gurus Team visit us earlier this year. The Australian group came to South Africa to explore some of its amazing plant life, and were drawn to Grootbos because of the huge variety of unspoilt Fynbos that we have on the reserve, and the amazing work that Green Futures is doing in training unemployed locals in Fynbos horticulture so successfully.

Every one of the crew also planted a tree as part of the Future Trees Project, and I think that everything that the Foundation is doing for the conservation of our wonderful fuana really touched the Gurus.
