New Hockey Project gets German Skills

There are two lovely new additions to our sports programme at the Gansbaai Sports Centre: Lena Jacobi and Hannah Pehle from Germany. Lena and Hannah joined the Football Foundation/Grootbos Foundation’s hockey project and will be coaching at the centre for the next 3 months.

Lena plays for the National German Women’s Hockey Team and Hannah for the u/21 German Women’s Hockey Team. Both of them play for the club ‘Rüsselsheimer RK’ in Germany. Lena is from Mainz and has finished her Bachelor studies in Aviation Management; Hannah is from Darmstadt and finished secondary school this year. Lena first came to know of the project through Michael Lutzeyer who invited the German Women’s Team out to Grootbos when they were playing in South Africa in January this year.

Welcome girls, its great to have such enthusiastic and skillful people on the team!

Training takes place Tuesdays & Thursdays 15:00 - 16:30 at the Gansbaai Sports Centre, children of all ages and schools are welcome. Contact: aneen@footballfoundation.co.za

Womens Day presentation for the youngsters of Masakhane

In August we celebrated Women’s Day in Gansbaai! 54 Years ago, on 9 August 1956, 20,000 women fought for freedom and equality by staging a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act of 1950. Since 1994, August 9 is commemorated annually and is known as Women’s Day in South Africa.

Womens Day PresentationWe celebrated the lives of 3 extraordinary South African women with a presentation for the children. “Mama Africa” was presented by our own passionate women Leán. The kids sang along heartily to Makeba’s famous “The Click Song”. One of South Africa’s most successful sportswomen, Penny Heyns, was introduced next: She won two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Atlanta and broke 14 world records in her extraordinary career as one of the world’s best breaststrokers. In the arts arena it was Charlize Theron who took to the stage, the first South African to win an OSCAR for best actress (Monster). She is a UN Messenger of Peace, involved in Women’s Rights organizations and also runs her own “Africa Outreach Project”.
Thanks to Glenda and staff at the Gansbaai Tourism Centre for the use of their fantastic conference room!

Green Futures Students off to EDEN!

The time of year has come for our intrepid Green Futures Students to go out and explore the big wide world! Each year the students get placed in one of three places for three weeks of practical training and experience. It is a fantastic thrill for the youngsters, an a great way for them to experience something different to the Green Futures College.

The first and most prestigeous destination is the EDEN Project in Cornwall, UK! It is a huge honour to be one of the three students who goes to EDEN, and the selection process is started by the students themselves voting which three of their classmate they think deserve to go. The lecturers then have a say, and finally an independant panel interviews all the students. This year we are very proud to have Promise, Anecke and Lukas as ambassadors for Green Futures and South Africa at EDEN. The three are accompanied by Susan Lochner, and left on Sunday the 28th of June.

A second batch of students spend their three weeks at the beautiful Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in Betties Bay, while a third group go to the Kirstenbosch National Gardens in Cape Town.

Its always an extremely exciting time for all involved, and I look forward to relating some of their stories so keep an eye on the blog.
