Green Futures Students Get a Taste of The Karoo

Last week the Green Futures students and staff drove out to Worcester to visit the beautiful and well regarded Karoo National Botanical Garden.

The vegetation found in these gardens is extremely unique, and many similarities are found with some of the succulent species that occurr in the Grootbos area. Much of the plantlife however, was very new to the students, and proved to be a fantastic experience for them. It was great for them to examine the plants in such a dry climate as well, as this is central to the theme of water-wise gardening, which we are very focussed on at the Green Futures Nursery and Grootbos Foundation Landscaping Collaborative.

The little outings such as this one are so important for the students, especially at this late stage of their course. It gives them some added exposure to the world out there, and inpsires them towards the different places where they could find employment. A great day, that was enjoyed by all!

Ajax Cape Town Coaching Course

On Sunday 11th October, the Football Foundation once again brought in a high profile individual to run a coaching clinic for the local soccer coaches and young players. Mr Jan Pruijn is well known to the soccer fraternity as Ajax Cape Town Head of Technical Affairs, and recently appointed as Ajax Head Coach to replace Mushin Ertugral. The clinic took place at the Gansbaai Sports Centre, and despite driving rains it was an excellent and much improved clinic compared to last year in terms of numbers. There were 8 coaches from Stanford, 3 from Hawston, 3 from Hermanus, 2 from Masakhane and 4 from FFSA. It was great to bring coaches from across the Overberg together to learn more about training techniques and tactics of the game from such a high profile and PSL coach. Thanks to everyone who attended this event. For more information contact Sicelo Heukile (FFSA Head Coach) on 076 5362311.

Gansbaai United Take on Santos U/15

Gansbaai vs. Santos match - 1 October 2009, Cape Town

After extensive and dedicated training during the month of September, including an action-packed holiday programme, the Gansbaai u/15 boys’ soccer team was ready to challenge the formidable Santos u/15 team in Cape Town. 18 boys traveled to Cape Town along with their Football Foundation coaches to challenge the Junior side of the “The People’s Team” - Santos 1st Division is currently ranked 5th in PSL fixtures. At first the Gansbaai boys were a little nervous to play the experienced team from Cape Town, but in the second half the put up a strong fight and only conceded one goal. Our boys lost 3-0, but they learnt an immense amount and thoroughly enjoyed the game - the experience was amazing! They even got to watch the Santos u/17’s train which was a bonus.

Afterwards the boys visited the Aquarium and the Waterfront for the first time, where they saw 3m ragged tooth sharks, a giant stingray, miniature seahorses and little Nemo fish! They enjoyed every minute! Outside the beautiful sunny day was calling and it was time to play beach soccer at Camps Bay. It was a fun day packed full of excitement and adventure; a day the boys are bound to remember for a long time! A great thanks to the coaches for their support, but also to the boys for their superb behaviour!

New Residents at Growing the Future

Great excitement is in the air at the project site, because a Cape Eagle Owl has started moving in to one of the boxes at Growing the Future!!

The boxes are placed around the vegetable gardens specifically to entice owls, which are great for contorlling the numbers of mice found in the fields. If the number of mice gets too high, they can cause havoc by diggin up and eating seeds which are planted. They are particularly partial to large seeds such as squashes, pumpkins and melons. By using the wise old owls as pest control, we are able to steer clear of having to use pesticides.

We believe that the new visitor is a male owl, who is trying to make the nesting box as alluring as possible to all the available lady owls in the area, so hopefully we will be able to report on baby owls sometime soon!

Were very pleased to have these additions to the Growing the Future family; welcome!
