There was great excitement last week as we had a day visit from the German Womens Hockey Team who are currently touring South Africa. The squad of players, coaching staff and managers travelled all the way from Stellenbosch to spend the day experiencing the Foundations projects.
They were especially interested in seeing the Spaces for Sports project, because in addition to the FIFA standard soccer pitch, there are also two hockey fields being built on the site. The ladies were hugely impressed by the scale and quality of the project, and were amazed that such a project could exist in a small town such as Gansbaai.
The team also visited the creche and Foundation vegetable garden at the Siyakula project, and were thrilled to meet some of the children of Masakhane Township. They tried very hard to instil a hockey culture in the young budding sports stars! It was great to see this team of young ambassadors getting so enthusiastically involved in our local community.
The ladies then returned to Grootbos to meet with our 2009 Green Futures students. It was a great meeting from both sides I think, and the students regaled the visitors with some song and dance, while the girls enjoyed experiencing the wonderful learning environment of the college.
It was lovely to have the hockey players at Grootbos, and we would like to thank them for making the effort and for being so interested and enthusiastic. There was talk of trying to link our Spaces for Sport project with various universities and institutions in Germany, and we will work hard to make these links a reality.
Good luck with your matches against South Africa girls, and we look forward to seeing you again!
